Finally I’m back home. I went to Taiwan for a short holiday with my girlfriend. Everything there were pretty much similar with Singapore except for one thing I noticed.
The sales assistants there are some of the best sales people with great service I have ever saw. Whenever my girlfriend and I enters a shop, without fail, we will be warmly greeted “Welcome” in Chinese and they greeted everyone with enthusiasm, even to their locals.
My girlfriend was the one buying the most of the stuff and almost everything she likes she will try them on to see if it fits. Well, without saying the sales staff there likes her a lot. So they will be lurking behind to get her the right size.
When she walks out of the fitting room and ask me if the dress looks good on her and before I can say anything, the sales assistant will say all the sweetest things about her and her new dress. The strangest thing was they all sounded real sincere and genuine.
Here’s the best part.
When my girlfriend decided the dress is not for her, they went searching for another dress that they think she might like and try up selling her. Again they sounded very sincere and genuine in helping to find her the perfect dress.
Back in my mind, I knew what the salesperson was doing but I stepped back to see how the whole thing goes. To my surprise, my girlfriend bought the second dress the salesperson recommended without feeling being forced to buy.
So what has this to do with network marketing.
Like any business, to generate sales or profit you need to sell and network marketing being a very direct sales oriented type of business selling is a must. I have seen many people doing what I think is a wrong approach. They try to force sell everyone they talk to to buy their products and join their organization. If they are fortunate enough they might make the first sales and chances are that their prospect will not buy the second time.
I strongly recommended anyone in the network marketing industry to use the recommendation approach. There are times when the hard approach works better, you need to weigh yourself and justify which will work better during different situation and with different people.
Even if your prospect did not join or buy from you the first time, they will develop something call the buyer’s remorse. It’s a process when your prospect feel obliged to buy from you or join you because you treated them so sincerely and genuinely. It will work better if you give them a gift that is of value, this will increase buyer’s remorse.
The key here is to speak to their heart and not because you wanted to make money out of their pockets. It applies the same if you are a real estate agent or insurance agent or someone trying to sell something.

Terry,
You make some very good points. Much of the problem is with “old school” thinking and trying to force ones self on a prospect. That is why so many people have a bad experience with these old tactics. I am of new school thinking and you must be sincere and solve a problem for your client. all the best!
Hi Andrew,
THanks for dropping by. The old school method is dead and probably don’t work as well any more.
Great to have a fellow network marketer. I will check out your blog.
