The Protege - Too Good, Too Viral

by Terry Tay on February 26, 2007

Today I went to catch a movie. I’m a fan of Andy Lau and without fail I will watch all of his movies. His latest movie “The Protege” was during the Chinese New Year and It was a hit here in Asia. The show is about the underground drug industry in Asia.

I heard and read reviews on the movie giving it a rating of 5 which was the best. Friends were talking about it saying that this movie is better than “Infernal Affairs” also another great movie starring Andy Lau. It almost seems that everyone was giving a 5 upon 5 rating on this movie, everyone is talking about it, telling me its a MUST watch movie and so I did.

After the movie, to me I find it acceptable nothing special or extraordinary about it. I was a nice movie but I won’t give it a 5 rating but maybe a 4. I still find “Infernal Affairs” far better than this.

But…

Why is everyone talking about it? Hmm… You see, It only takes a few people to spread to a thousand over people about it and fast. Imagine a reviewer giving a good review report about the movie on the newspaper? Thousands and thousands of people will be talking about it. Its contagious and it keeps spreading about the show.

To date, by forms of statistics and averages, word of mouth marketing or viral marketing is one of the best methods of spreading the word around. Now you see the power of viral marketing? It may just take 10 person to let thousands of people know about whats going on.

This happened the same for “The Protege”. I was one of them, my friends told me that it was a MUST watch movie and I told my dad the same too without even watching it.. So you see the power?

Anyway, it was an overall good movie and through that movie you understand how the drug world works, nice and interesting.
