Usually when I select a forum to participate, I’ll make sure it has about 5000 members.

A forum normally talks about a general topic as a whole and have sub discussion thread where they talk about a specific area about the topic. For example, a dog forum will have sub discussion thread normally categories under puppy, breeding, training and even rescue. When the reader is looking for information about dog training they will go directly to the thread that talks about training. In the perspective of forum marketing, you are able to know which group of audience you should talk to.
Before I go on discussing how you can ue forum to drive traffic to your website, I want to tell you that although forum is a great place to hang out. Do not and I repeat DO NOT go into a forum solely for the purposes of posting advertisements for your product, services or business opportunity - It is considered as spam and the members in the forum will not welcome you there. Most probably your posts will be removed or worst you will be banned from that forum. Your first visit to that forum would probably be your last.
Just about every forum will enable you to set up a public profile where you can share with the world about yourself. This is a great chance for you to build credibility as an expert in your field. You are also able to use a signature file to your profile and on every post you made, it will appear at the bottom of your message. A typical signature file allows about 2-3 lines and a couple of URL link. You can use this signature file to let other members know what you are doing - in a more subtle and a non-spammy manner. Now that’s how you are going to drive visitors to your website - through your signature profile.
Forum works in a way that if you are a frequent contributer, you will gain much respect and credibility. So don’t go into a forum and expect other members to believe what you say. Establish yourself as part of the family first then people are going to open up their ears and listen to you.
Forum is great place to drive traffic but also a deadly place where most marketers lost track of what they are doing and spend half a day chatting in forums. If you even set yourself to do forum marketing, give yourself a time limit or post limit and stick to it. Do not spend too much time there.
